ON HOW THE EIF AND THE EU WILL SUPPORT THE PLAYERS OF CHANGE IN EUROPE.

"

We are facing an unprecedented global climate and environmental emergency and there is a growing awareness that change is urgently needed to redress the situation. We’re at the beginning of a revolution that will enable more sustainable economic development and growth at a lower climate and environmental cost. Every sector of the economy needs to transform. The need is massive and so is the market opportunity. Whereas sustainability used to be a “nice to have” now it is a “must have”. Against this backdrop, investment is set to accelerate and risk capital – and significant amounts of it - will be critical in bringing about the innovation and level of transformation required. The EIF has been an early investor in climate and environmental VC and is committed to increasing the availability of capital to fuel the development of game-changing innovation that can contribute to a greener future.

"

Investments in climate and infrastructure funds promote the climate transition in Europe, catalyse sustainable growth and bring a stable return on investment. We thoroughly assess the climate contribution of our potential investee funds during due diligence –all underlying investments need to be fully Paris-aligned and comply with best-in-class ESG standards. An EIF’s investment in an infrastructure fund will therefore serve as a “seal of approval” to the investment community. Additionally, we will be looking to address funding gaps (such as early project phases, underserved geographies, nascent technologies or emerging fund managers) to make sure our support goes where it is most needed. We have an ambitious pipeline and a team committed to turn words into action.

In order to meet the EU´s climate ambitions, the green transition needs to happen across all segments of activity and consider that small enterprises are at the very heart of any transformation of the EU economy. For this purpose, the European Commission and the EIF will soon launch under InvestEU a set of initiatives focused on supporting the greening of Europe in several dimensions. It will support the green transition of small enterprises across all sectors and promote the EU’s competitiveness and leadership in climate and environmental technologies, as well as investments in climate and infrastructure via funds. Coming very soon.
