SMEs AND INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS PLAY A PIVOTAL ROLE
IN ACHIEVING CLIMATE NEUTRALITY ACROSS EUROPE BY 2050.
Their potential to make a positive cumulative environmental impact is undisputable.
Many small and mid-sized companies are already adapting and transitioning towards greener, more sustainable practices, activities, goods and services due to customer demand and changes in environmental legislation. What’s more, they are also at the forefront of climate and environmental innovation, delivering the breakthroughs needed to reach the ambitious goals of the European Green Deal, including reducing green house gas emissions by 55% by 2030.
Green infrastructure projects are a catalyst for sustainable growth and development, promoting the transition towards a greener economy. From transport systems to power generation, soil decontamination or sustainable urban development. And from large offshore windfarms to the electric vehicle charging station in your neighbourhood. If well-designed, infrastructure projects also tackle biodiversity and climate change adaptation.
The climate journey for both SMEs and infrastructure projects relies on the availability of green financing. This is where the EIF enters the game.

IN FINANCING GREEN INNOVATION.
The EIF made its first cleantech VC investment in 2006 and since then we have channelled over € 1bn to climate and environment VC and PE funds. These investments have helped catalyse €3.4bn for climate innovation from third party investors and saw the EIF recognized as Europe’s largest and most active LP of the decade in cleantech. Partnering with cleantech fund managers has provided access to finance for technological breakthroughs and also helped to back the expansion and growth of companies with tested products and technologies that can be deployed as of today.
